Training a Ferret in 6 Easy Steps

Ferrets as Pets

Many questions are raised each time owners are asked about ferret training. This includes nip training and litter training. Training a ferret pet normally takes time and requires certain skills but absolutely, every ferret owner has got to learn the basic tips and tricks. As a pet owner, you have to realize that not all pets are the same. Just like humans, these animals have their own level of capacity. They can get used to training or disciplining but the time spent for each pet may vary. It is also best to understand that not all methods are effective. Sometimes, training a ferret requires a combination or a particular method or system.

Nip training is definitely a concern for new ferret owners. Surely, the idea of bringing home a cuddly and lovable pet is welcoming, but when he suddenly nips you on your finger, the feeling is simply not the same. So, what are you supposed to do? Here are likely suggestions and tips:

First, do not harm your pets. True enough, nipping or biting certainly hurts but it does not necessarily mean that you have to hurt your pet. Some owners perceive this reaction as ordinary, but for our ferrets, this reaction begets fear. Violence, once inflicted to a pet, also encourages further nipping. In other words, hurting your ferret won’t help.

Second, do not think of their nipping as a negative trait. Sometimes, ferrets bite out of fear. Others resort to nipping if they want to play. Ferrets have tough skin, which is why they may not be hurting if they nip each other. On the contrary, as their owners, it is also our duty to understand and treat our pets properly.
Third, training a ferret not to bite may also include using hand signals. Clapping is one of them. If he nips too hard, you can say no and clap. After which, you can gently caress or scruff the back of your pet’s neck and gently pull him away from you.

Fourth, other owners opt to teach ‘time out’ sessions in training a ferret. For instance, some ferrets tend to be so stubborn that they keep on nipping. In times like these, you may try putting him back into their cage. Slowly, they will soon understand that nipping earns him a trip not on play land but back on their cages.
Fifth, you can try buying bitter apple or lime and spray it on your toes or fingers. This is to limit their nipping. While this trick proves useful, keep in mind that you have to use this product sparingly, as these items upset your ferret’s tummy.

Sixth, training a ferret not to bite or nip may also need some form of adjustment. Try to re evaluate things around your pet. Have you started wearing a new cologne or perfume? How about hand or foot lotion? These pets react towards certain scents that may lead to further nipping, so you may want to put some socks on after applying that fragrant foot lotion.
